Executive Director
Dear ipw reader,

what will our future look like? Two steps forward, one step back. If you want to know, what is needed in the year 2030, it is necessary, to look at 2050 first.

This process is called "Retropolation". After jumping to the year 2050 pictures of this future help to develop a gut feeling for the tomorrow. Viewing back to 2030 based on documented propositions those developments are deducted that have to be realized in the year 2030.

During (January 2014 to March 2015) the future project "Paper & Fiber World 2030" 640 innovative ideas were created. From the vantage point of present 375 for new paper applications were generated. A core team of 18 people along the value-added chain of paper industry and around 100 representatives from universities, companies and associations as well as students from different disciplines participated in 6 interdisciplinary future-workshops to work on project related questions. The result is 1.457 ideas of future needs in 8 thematic areas like, logistic, automotive construction, aerospace, medical applications and architecture.

From those ideas the requirements for "paper of the future" will derive and new applications will be evaluated according to market potential and time frames for their marketability.

For the first time the results of this project will be presented to the broad public at ZELLCHEMING-congress 2015. Have a look on the program and register yourself for a conference ticket.

Come to Frankfurt from June, 30th – July, 02nd, the ZELLCHEMING-Events in Frankfurt/Main and take advantage of the exiting program. About 160 exhibitors at the ZELLCHEMING-Expo are awaiting you! Let yourself be inspired about lots of fabulous exhibits like the Biofore Car from UPM.

UPM papers meet the highest environmental standards in WWF’s Check-your-paper tool

WWF’s Check-your-paper (CYP) tool is a public database for pulp and paper products with high environmental standards. The CYP method focuses on a limited number of environmental parameters including how well forests supplying fibre are managed, use of recycled fibre, fossil CO2 emissions, waste going to landfills and water pollution from mills. UPM has been part of CYP since the very beginning and was one of the first companies to rate papers in the tool. The used method is simple but not simplistic and has been developed and fine-tuned by WWF since 2007, in cooperation with scientists, paper buyers, producers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
