Dear ipw reader,

it takes more than one swallow to make a summer. This was my first thought after Metsä Fibre had announced its intention to invest EUR 1.1 billion in building a bio-product mill in the existing mill area in Äänekoski, Finland, at the end of April. Then, a row of pretty nice Q! results arrived, showing that this industry and its suppliers are still able to earn money.

And suddenly it seems as if everyone is pulling up his or her socks! The latest great news, published during PulPaper in Helsinki last week, is Södra’s EUR 440 million investment in Värö mill: When the expansion is complete, the Swedish site will be one of the biggest pine sulphate pulp mills in the world, with a total production capacity of 700,000 t/y.

By the way, we had record temperatures well above 30 °C, here in Germany this past Sunday. Summer is definitely here now...

Looking forward to seeing you at ZELLCHEMING expo in Frankfurt!

With best regards,
