Ilkka Hämälä, President and CEO of Metsä Group, is the new Chairman of Cepi

As of January 2022, Ilkka Hämälä takes over from his predecessor Ignazio Capuano as Chairman of Cepi, one of the leading and most influential trade associations representing the forest and bio-based industry sector in Brussels, the capital of the European Union. His mandate will last for two years.

Major event for the Pulp and Paper sector provides a concept for what the future of the EU’s industry could look like

Paper & Beyond is the annual event of the European Paper industry and its value chain. The theme of this year’s event is ‘shaping the next generation’. It brings together producers, manufacturers, policymakers and leading innovators in the sector. Today, during one of many sessions, was presented the concept of the Pulp, Paper and Recycling Mills of the Future, an ambitious vision for what might constitute the industrial basis of the future circular low-carbon bio-economy.

Spicy packaging wins design competition PIDA

The BillerudKorsnäs design competition PIDA has been completed. The overall winner is the French entry “Respice” made by the three design students Romane Bazile, Jeanne Douchet and Marion Braconnier from IUT Reims. The winning concept challenges conventional packaging and awakens the senses.

Jari Voutilainen appointed Metsä Group's SVP, Sourcing and Logistics

Jari Voutilainen has been appointed Metsä Group's Senior Vice President, Sourcing and Logistics as of October 1, 2021. He reports to President and CEO Ilkka Hämälä. Voutilainen has worked at Metsä Group since 2013. He moves to his new role from the position of Metsä Group's SVP, Corporate Affairs. Prior to that, he served as SVP, Logistics.

Jerry Larsson, President Wood, has been appointed Chairman of the industry organization Swedish Woods board. Jerry Larsson assumed the chairmanship in June 2021.

Lanxess: Michael Ertl to heading the Inorganic Pigments business unit

Michael Ertl (54) will take over as head of the Inorganic Pigments (IPG) business unit at Lanxess with immediate effect. He will be responsible for the specialty chemicals company’s global business with inorganic color pigments, which are used primarily in the construction industry. Ertl succeeds Holger Hueppeler (53), who heads the newly formed Flavors & Fragrances (F&F) business unit at Lanxess following the successfully completed acquisition of Emerald Kalama Chemical.

The paper and board industry continued to be very busy in April and so recovered paper demand also remained at a very high level for the lower, medium and high grades. The month again brought price increases for the medium grades and for imported, high-strength qualities whereas the lower grades stabilized at a high level.
