In the EU Clean Transition Dialogues, the pulp and paper industry has been heard, and wants to stay engaged

Announced by Commission President von der Leyen and chaired by Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefcovic, the Clean Transition Dialogues’ core aim is to support industry in building a business model fit for a decarbonised economy. With the right priorities now clearly identified, the collaborative approach now more than ever needs to be continued.

Heubach GmbH required to file for insolvency

Heubach GmbH filed an application today for the opening of regular insolvency proceedings over its assets with the competent insolvency court in Braunschweig and, at the same time, applied for the jurisdiction of the Braunschweig insolvency court as the group court for the German subgroup of the Heubach Group. The court is expected to appoint an insolvency administrator to examine the possibility of continuing business operations and possible options for restructuring and/or selling the business in due course.

Cepi welcomes EU Parliament vote on Carbon Removals, but calls for a definition of renewable carbon

The EU Parliament put today its stamp of approval on the EU’s carbon removal certification framework. The regulation provides guiding principles for a set of methodologies, still in development, to certify processes to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Much still needs to be defined through a dedicated expert group. Such definitions should include ‘renewable carbon’, the missing link to a circular, climate-friendly economic model.

The Voith Group mourns the loss of its former member of the Corporate Board of Management, Mr. Hans Müller. Müller passed away on March 20, 2024 at the age of 82.

Continuous improvement of environmental footprint of paper sacks

The European kraft paper and paper sack industry has a long tradition of tracking and communicating its environmental impact. Between 2007 and 2021, the carbon intensity of a single paper sack was reduced by 28%. This is the result of the latest carbon footprint analysis on European paper sacks. It was conducted by the Swedish research institute RISE on behalf of the European Paper Sack Research Group (ESG), a collaboration between EUROSAC and CEPI Eurokraft. Also, the fossil carbon impact per tonne of sack kraft paper was reduced by 26% during the same time. The most important findings are summarised in an infographic.

Pulp & Beyond 2024: A deep dive into climate change and the future of forest industry

The international forest industry event, Pulp & Beyond 2024, will address topics such as climate change, the green transition and the future prospects of the forest industry. The event will also feature discussions on global economy and politics, as well as the importance of innovation. Pulp & Beyond 2024 will take place from Wednesday to Thursday, April 10th to 11th, 2024, at the Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre. The main stage program of the event has been released, offering top-notch keynote speeches and panel discussions. The main stage program will be hosted and moderated by André Noël Chaker. The program for the Speaker’s Corner on the event's second stage will be announced in March.

Marco Eikelenboom, CEO of Sappi Europe is the incoming Chairperson of Cepi

As of January 2024, Marco Eikelenboom, CEO of Sappi Europe takes over as Chairperson of Cepi from his predecessor Ilkka Hämälä, CEO of Metsä Group. Cepi is an influential trade association in the forest and bio-based industry sector. It is headquartered in Brussels, the capital of the European Union from where Mr. Eikelenboom will carry out his two-year tenure as Cepi’s chairperson.
