On 03 March to 04 March 2021, the established PTS conference “Paper & Board for Food Contact” will take place again - this time with two innovations. Firstly, the conference language will be English and secondly, the event will be online.
Giovacchino Giurlani is the new Managing Director of the Fold Division of Körbers Business Area Tissue. He has an in-depth knowledge of the tissue market and technologies. After graduating in Electronic Engineering at the University of Pisa, he began his professional career at Fabio Perini S.p.A. - a company that was already part of the Körber Group at that time - where he was in charge of sales as Area Sales Manager, and design in the role of Production Mechanical Technical Manager.
Despite the slowing down of the European economy and the sanitary restrictions, most of the mills ran without disruptions in 2020; even if some operated at reduced speed because of lower levels of demand.
From Simancas to Fabriano, with the aim of reconstructing “le vie della carta” (the paper routes) in Mare Nostrum, the crossroads of populations and ideas since the dawn of time. Following the first workshop held in Simancas in Spain last January, the workshop “Paper in Motion” of COST Action PIMo (People in Motion) will be in Fabriano, the paper manufacturing city par excellence.

The PulPaper event will be rescheduled to the spring of 2022. The decision is due to the uncertainty caused by the pandemic situation and travel restrictions. This spring, however, a new online Virtual pre-PulPaper event is organized on Thursday 29 April 2021.

The world paper industry is currently facing far-reaching structural changes due to the digitalisation of society and business, the globalisation of industries and the consequent redistribution of wealth. The pandemic has pushed the global paper market onto a new trajectory with significant long-term implications. World demand for paper and board is forecast to grow by 1.1%/a in the long-term, from 410 million tonnes in 2019 to 488 million tonnes by 2035.
Sappi announced that Marco Eikelenboom (53), currently Vice President Marketing & Sales, Graphic Papers at Sappi Europe, has been appointed as CEO of Sappi Europe as from 1 April 2021. Marco Eikelenboom succeeds Berry Wiersum (65), a 40-year veteran of the industry in Europe, who will retire at the end of March 2021. Berry Wiersum joined Sappi as CEO of Sappi Europe, a position he held for 14 years.
Last week, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the New Industrial Strategy for Europe, a report by Italian Member of the European Parliament Carlo Calenda (S&D – Envi Committee).
On Wednesday the wood fibre-based packaging alliance 4evergreen held its launch event entitled “Perfecting circularity with fibre-based packaging”. The online event included a panel debate with industry leaders from Stora Enso (Finland), Huhtamaki (Finland), Mars (US), Nestlé (Switzerland) and Smurfit Kappa (Ireland).
