Södra Cell buys PulpEye analyzers for its pulp mills

Södra Cell has signed an order for four PulpEye analyzers for quality inspection online at the pulp mills in Mönsterås, Mörrum and Värö in Sweden. It is the second largest order ever signed by PulpEye. Södra Cell, with its three pulp mills in, is a producer of market pulp. The largest part of the production consists of bleached paper pulp, both long and short fibre pulps. Textile pulp is also produced at the pulp mill in Mörrum. Södra Cell is also a significant producer and supplier of biofuels, green electricity, district heating and raw materials for biofuels.

Andritz to supply key equipment and processes to Stora Enso in Oulu, Finland

Andritz has received an order from Stora Enso to deliver a new debarking line, a new biomass boiler, and to upgrade the recausticizing plant for its Oulu mill in Finland.

Voith increases winder performance with integrated technology service and automatic format change

Voith introduces an integrated service offering to increase winder performance in all applications, along with FastFormat, a new solution for automatic format changes. The performance of the winder is crucial for the efficiency of the paper machine, because winder operation that is not optimal can lead to capacity bottlenecks across the entire paper production process. To avoid this, Voith now offers an integrated technology service for higher winder availability. FastFormat, a new product for automatic format changes, also increases winder performance and ensures greater safety for operators.

Sappi Europe announces major paper machine upgrade and modernisation at its Gratkorn mill

Sappi Europe’s Gratkorn mill in Austria is a producer of coated woodfree paper on two paper machines, supporting Sappi Europe’s market position and in particular its core Commercial Print business. The mill has benefited from a regular investment programme, including in recent years the upgrade of the PM9 in 2019. The current upgrade and modernisation project will focus on Paper Machine 11 (PM11), which will undergo extensive modernisation of automation and electrical equipment including drives, control systems, quality control and inspection systems as well as upgrades to the coating profile and other areas.

Stora Enso plans to divest its consumer board production site and forestry operations in China

Stora Enso has initiated a sales process for a possible divestment of its consumer board production site in Beihai, China. The divestment would also include the Group’s forestry operations in the surrounding region, which supply raw material to the Beihai site. The sales process supports Stora Enso’s strategy to focus on long-term profitable growth within the areas of renewable packaging, building solutions and biomaterials innovations.

Toscotec to supply first tissue line to Indian Paper and Board manufacturer Gayatrishakti

Toscotec will supply a complete Ahead 1.8 tissue machine to Gayatrishakti Tissue to be installed at their paper mill in Vapi, Gujarat. The Indian manufacturer is entering the tissue market with this new line slated for start-up in 2024. The Ahead 1.8 tissue machine has sheet trim width of 2,850 mm, an operating speed of 1,800 m/min, a production of over 35,000 tpy.

Mondi has expanded its paper bag footprint in Morocco

Mondi has started production at its €16 million greenfield plant in Morocco, which can produce 100 million paper bags each year. This brings Mondi’s total capacity in West Africa to over 500 million bags annually, helping to meet the growing customer demand for paper bags in the region. This plant is Mondi’s fourth site in West Africa (in addition to two plants in Morocco and one in Ivory Coast).

Stora Enso invests to strengthen focus on specialised pulp grades

Stora Enso strengthens its focus on specialised pulp grades by investing EUR 38 million in unbleached kraft pulp (UKP) production at its Enocell site in Finland and EUR 42 million in fluff pulp production improvement at its Skutskär site in Sweden. These investments will support the growing consumer demand for non-bleached renewable packaging materials and hygiene products respectively.

Voith remains on a sustainable growth path

The Voith Group performed satisfactorily in the 2021/22 fiscal year (ending on September 30) and is proving to be in a robust condition with regard to its operations and finances. The Group’s orders received have further increased in comparison to the already high previous-year level. Sales rose perceptibly and both the operating result and the net income grew appreciably. The Company’s broad sectoral and geographical diversification and the solid market position of the three Group Divisions contributed to this development, as did regional supply chains. Voith is furthermore profiting from a sound financial strength that enables the Company to make substantial investments in the development of innovative technologies and in acquisitions to exploit strategic growth areas, even in a difficult economic environment.

Valmet's climate work recognized in CDP's climate listing

Valmet has been recognized for its climate work by receiving A- rating and reaching a leadership level in CDP's Climate ranking. CDP's evaluation is based on the company's disclosure about its strategy, targets, governance, risks and opportunities, risk management and actions in the last reporting year related to climate change mitigation and development of low-carbon technology and solutions. CDP is a global non-profit environmental disclosure platform that drives companies and governments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, safeguard water resources and protect forests.

Andritz to supply VIB moisturizing technology for Xianhe Group in Hubei Province, China

International technology group Andritz has received an order from Xianhe Co., Ltd., in Hubei Province, China, for the supply of VIB moisturizing technology for two new paper machines. The plants will supply 300 t/day décor paper with a machine speed of 1,000 m/min and a paper width of 3,860 mm. The equipment installation is expected to be completed during the second half of 2023.

Stora Enso and Huhtamaki advance European paper cup recycling initiative

The Cup Collective, a programme founded by Stora Enso and Huhtamaki to capture the value of used paper cups through recycling at an industrial scale, has welcomed its first partners. The new partners include McDonald’s, SSP - The Food Travel Experts, C2 Centre, and the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB), all further supporting the initiative’s ability to significantly increase paper cup recycling volumes in Europe.

SCA acquires wind farm in Markbygden

SCA has acquired its first wind farm with the purchase of 36 wind turbines in Markbygden in Piteå municipality, northern Sweden. The acquisition is in line with the company’s previously stated goal of becoming one of the Sweden’s leading providers of fossil-free electricity generated by wind power. Twenty per cent of Sweden's installed wind power capacity is currently located on land owned by SCA.

Using CO2 emissions from industry to make climate-friendly plastics

Reducing industrial carbon dioxide emissions plays a key role in the fight against climate change. Utilization of CO2 emissions is an important means to this end. A research project coordinated by VTT examines the capture and utilisation of carbon dioxide from the forest industry and waste incineration in the manufacture of different types of plastic products. Simultaneously, process concepts will be developed to enable the commercial utilisation of carbon dioxide emissions also in other fields of industry.

4evergreen alliance launches landmark industry tool to assess fibre-based packaging recyclability

Today, the 4evergreen alliance publishes the beta version of its Fibre-Based Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Protocol, part one for standard mills. This landmark tool will help the entire value chain enhance and harmonise how it evaluates the recyclability of existing and future packaging products. Fibre-based packaging designers, manufacturers and recyclers are constantly innovating to create new products and technologies. Their aim is to maximise circularity and help the sector play a crucial, positive role in shaping Europe’s climate-neutral future. But so far, they have lacked a common European method to assess product recyclability.
