Mineral oil hydrocarbons in foodstuffs - contaminant legislation as useful regulatory approach to prevent contaminations

The Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SC PAFF) of the European Commission has published maximum concentration levels for aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) in food for an EU-wide harmonized assessment of these food contaminants at the end of April 2022. This means that the regulation of MOAH as contaminants is de facto set. The regulation of MOAH from fcm paper containing recovered paper within a national mineral oil regulation, which is questionable in parts anyway, is now outdated and became redundant.

Pulpaper 2022 programme has been published

The international PulPaper 2022 event for the forest industry will be organised from Tuesday to Thursday, 7 – 9 June 2022 at Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre. The event consists of an exhibition with about 250 participating companies and programme entirely in English. The programme is presented at Future Square on the exhibition area and the event has two paid seminars, the PulPaper Conference and Green Economy Business Summit. The event also offers a multitude of networking opportunities.

ABB increases Asian automated paper testing footprint with newest solution now in Vietnam

ABB has built on its established relationship with Cheng Loong Corporation by securing a contract to bring its L&W Autoline automated paper testing solution to a mill in Vietnam. Cheng Loong Binh Duong Paper Company’s mill in the southeast of Vietnam will now have the market’s “fastest and most reliable automated paper testing solution” to deliver accurate and repeatable quality reports in minutes. The L&W Autoline will be fitted with modules for thickness, tensile stiffness orientation (TSO), moisture, bursting strength and grammage measurements – improving quality and saving time when compared to stand-alone laboratory testing.

Stora Enso launches biodiversity programme for own forests in Sweden

Stora Enso has launched a comprehensive biodiversity programme and related targets for its land holdings in Sweden. The programme, which covers the Company’s forest land in Sweden, has five focus areas, each with specific actions and measurable targets for 2030.

Technical testing solutions from Emtec at Zellcheming 2022

Measuring and testing device manufacturer Emtec Electronic will present solutions for determining fillers in paper and board without combustion, measuring particle charge and zeta potential, analyzing softness, and more at the Zellcheming Expo in Wiesbaden, Germany, from June 29 to July 1, 2022.

ITC commissions Voith with rebuild of specialty paper machine PM 1 in Chandrahati

India's paper manufacturer ITC Limited PSPD has commissioned Voith to rebuild PM 1, including stock preparation, at its Chandrahati site, about 60 kilometers north of Kolkata. With the rebuilt décor paper machine, the company will increase its production capacity for high-quality décor paper with basis weights of 40 - 90 gsm and thus further expand its market position.

Toscotec to supply a wet end rebuild to Cartiere di Guarcino in Italy

Specialty paper manufacturer Cartiere di Guarcino selected Toscotec for the rebuild of PM2 at its Guarcino paper mill near Frosinone in Italy. The project is scheduled for December 2022. The rebuild consists of the modification of the paper machine’s forming and press sections with installation of both Toscotec’s and Voith’s technology.

Mondi Grünburg inaugurates cutting-edge sheetfed offset technology from Koenig & Bauer

Last year, the Mondi Group announced an investment in new press equipment for its plant in Grünburg near Linz, Austria. Its aim is to further strengthen the company’s standing on the Austrian market as a fully integrated supplier of both flexo and offset corrugated packaging solutions. The new sheetfed offset press, a six-colour Rapida 164 with inline coater (max. sheet format 1,205 x 1,640 mm, production speeds up to 16,000 sheets) represents the latest state of the art.

Navigator takes part in Graphispag

The Navigator Company will again be present at Graphispag, trade fair for the printing industry, held in Barcelona from 24 to 27 May, together with Hispack, the largest packaging trade fair in the Iberian Peninsula. The event will feature over 400 exhibitors and around 40,000 visitors are expected. The Company will be there with its latest brand of packaging paper – gKraft – in the spotlight, in addition to the other brands of uncoated printing papers, Soporset and Inaset.

Andritz to supply LimeDry lime mud filter to BillerudKorsnäs’ Frövi mill in Sweden

International technology group Andritz has received an order from the Swedish pulp and paper producer BillerudKorsnäs to deliver a LimeDry lime mud filter for the recausticizing plant at its Frövi/Rockhammar pulp mill in Örebro, Sweden. Start-up for the new LimeDry lime mud filter is scheduled for the second half of 2022.

Stora Enso divests its packaging operations in Russia

Stora Enso has divested its three corrugated packaging plants in Russia. The Company’s Lukhovitsy, Arzamas and Balabanovo packaging plants have been divested to local management. Stora Enso’s assessment is that due to the uncertainties in the Russian market, local ownership and operation will provide a more sustainable long-term solution for these businesses and their respective employees.

Valmet to supply a major delivery to Eren Paper’s Shotton Mill in the UK

Valmet will supply Old Corrugated Containers (OCC), stock preparation and container board lines with a large scope of automation systems, Industrial Internet solutions and services to Eren Paper’s Shotton Mill Limited in the United Kingdom. The new container board making line (PM3) will produce high-quality testliner and fluting grades, and it will use 100% recycled paper. The start-up of PM3 is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024.

Successful performance of Voith´s new thermal protection coating TerraDry PN at PM 4 of Hamburger Containerboard

Hamburger Containerboard, a producer of high-quality corrugated case material products for customers throughout Europe, has significantly reduced cleaning efforts during shutdowns and increased efficiency thanks to Voith's new thermal protection coating TerraDry PN. Part of Austrian Prinzhorn Holding, Hamburger Containerboard produces testliner on the PM 4 at its site in Pitten, Austria, for further processing into sustainable packaging materials.

Sappi successfully advances plans for decarbonisation

Responding to climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our times. As a global company, Sappi is committed to being part of the solution and is focused on decarbonising its operations. As part of its long-term global commitment to climate protection and sustainable production, Sappi will be abandoning the use of coal at its German site in Stockstadt as a next step. To this end, the current coal-fired Boiler 9 will be decommissioned, and the mill will be operated using only renewable biomass and natural gas.

ABB extends to offer new insertion design and larger flow-through options

ABB has updated its KPM KC7 Microwave Consistency Transmitter portfolio with a larger flow-through sensor to fit process pipes with a diameter of up to 16”, giving more customers the choice to measure the total consistency of mixed pulps with a flow-through sensor. The technology leader has also launched a redesigned insertion type with a new dual-plate sensor.

Andritz upgrades tissue machines at Sofidel

International technology group Andritz has signed an agreement with the Sofidel Group to upgrade hood technology at its Kisa tissue mill in Sweden. The Andritz equipment will enable Sofidel to use renewable gas (bio-syngas) to dry tissue or any other type of paper. This is the first-time that bio-syngas will be used in the paper industry for paper drying. Start-up is planned for the first half of 2023.

Walki invests in printing machine in Pietarsaari

Walki has made a significant investment in its Pietarsaari plant by purchasing a 10-colour flexographic printing press. The new 10-colour flexographic printing press enables better and more accurate printing, which is important particularly in the highly competitive food industry.

Valmet to complete biomass boiler at Vilnius Combined Heat and Power Plant, Lithuania

Valmet has been selected in a new public procurement process as the tenderer for completing the biomass boiler, flue gas cleaning and flue gas condensing system works for Vilnius Combined Heat and Power Plant (Vilnius CHP) in Lithuania. Vilnius CHP is working on a modern heat generation capacity expansion project in the Vilnius central heating system. The new public procurement process was needed since the original contractor was unable to complete the works.

PulPac, Nordic barrier coating and OrganoClick has been granted funding from BioInnovation

The consortium of PulPac, Nordic Barrier Coating and OrganoClick has been granted financial support for continued development of 100 % biobased, plastic- and PFAS-free barriers and materials for demanding food packaging applications. The development project is funded from the Swedish strategic innovation program BioInnovation financed by the Swedish innovation agency Vinnova.
