Dear ipw reader,

In its current reporting year 2010, the German Working Group Graphic Papers (AGRAPA) published a recycling rate of 88.3%. Already in 1994 it has agreed to sustain the recycling rate on a permanent level of above 80% (+/- 3%). The target has been well met over the time even though production volumes decreased recently - and this can certainly be called a big success story!

However, the waste guidance just issued by the European Commission's environment department poses a serious risk to advancing a recycling society in Europe. No wonder, CEPI, the industry’s stronghold in Brussels, already filed a protest…

Metso: Zhanjiang Chenming PM 1 sets world speed record

On May 8 the Metso-supplied PM 1 fine paper machine at Zhanjiang Chenming Pulp & Paper Co., Ltd. in Zhanjiang City in China set a woodfree uncoated machine 24-hour world speed record of 1,710 m/min.

Metso: Rebuild for SCA Graphic Laakirchen AG started up

The SCA Graphic Laakirchen AG PM 10 was successfully started up on January 23 after a Metso-supplied press section rebuild in Laakirchen, Austria. The main target of the modernization was to increase production and to decrease energy consumption.

SCA: Acquisition of Georgia-Pacific's European tissue business closed

SCA's acquisition of Georgia-Pacific's European tissue business has been completed. The purchase price amounts to EUR 1.32 billion on a debt-free basis. The acquired operations had sales in 2011 amounting to EUR 1.25 billion.

SCA appointed Joséphine Edwall-Björklund, 48, as new senior vice president Corporate Communications. Edwall-Björklund has held leading positions in communications since 1988. She currently holds the position of Vice President Communications at Ericsson Global Services.

PTS - the Paper Technology Specialists - are mourning the passing away of its longtime managing director and director of the institute Prof. Dr-Ing. Heinrich Ludwig Baumgarten who deceased on July 5.

AGRAPA: Recycling quota of 88.3% well above voluntary agreement

In its current reporting year 2010, the German Working Group Graphic Papers (AGRAPA) has published a recycling rate of 88.3%. In total, about 6.9 million t of graphic recovered paper was used to produce paper and board.

CEPI: EU Commission’s view on recycling will cause problems

The waste guidance issued by the European Commission's environment department poses a serious risk to advancing a recycling society in Europe, EU paper industry association CEPI warns. The guidance is linked to a second batch of End-of-Waste (EoW) measures, applied to paper, copper and glass, likely to be adopted by an EU regulatory committee.

Lower wood chip and pulplogs prices due to weaker pulp markets

Weaker pulp markets have resulted in lower wood chip and pulplogs prices worldwide, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly. The biggest declines were seen in Western Canada, Europe and Brazil, while Chile, Australia and New Zealand experienced some minor price increases.
