Dear ipw reader,

625 years ago, when the Nuremberg councilor Ulman Stromer began the operation of a  rag mill, he could not imagine the tremendous development the art of paper making would undergo and how paper would accompany the destiny of the world. Today the German paper industry is number one in Europe and 4th in the world. A society without paper is almost unimaginable.

Many business have opened their doors to the public for this celebration. For a full list, see the news piece below.

625 Years of Paper in Germany

On June 24th the German paper industry (VDP = Association of German Paper-manufacturers) celebrates a 625 year history. Many paper manufacturers will open their doors to mark this special event.

Valmet to upgrade evaporators at Södra Cell, Mönsterås pulp mill in Sweden

The upgrade will unload the capacity of the existing evaporation line No 1 and improve steam economy by increasing the capacity of the existing evaporation line No 2. The delivery is scheduled for autumn 2016. The value of the order will not be disclosed, but is estimated at around EUR 10 million.

Norske Skog discontinues operations at the Walsum mill in Duisburg

In 2015, Walsum's cash flow to the Norske Skog group has been negative with up to NOK 10 million per month. Therefore, the board of Norske Skog has decided to discontinue operations at Walsum in order to prevent further losses for the group. There are 291 employees at the mill, which has an annual production capacity of 205,000 tons of light-weight coated (LWC) paper.

Environmental impact assessment program for Finnpulp's new softwood pulp mill to be launched

Finnpulp Oy has submitted an environmental impact assessment program to the North Savo Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment regarding the pulp mill project in Sorsasalo, Kuopio.

New study shows that paper is better than plastic

IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute has concluded a comparative study on the environmental performance of different packaging solutions. The study compares the lifecycles of plastic products versus corresponding paper products from BillerudKorsnäs. The results show that paper has considerably more favorable environmental qualities than plastic, such as 50-70% lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Changes in the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board of HOMAG Group AG

The Supervisory Board of HOMAG Group AG appointed Pekka Paasivaara (53) as Chief Executive Officer of HOMAG Group AG. Together with Ralph Heuwing, who will be Co-CEO during a transition period until September 15, 2015, and the Management Board team, Mr. Paasivaara will drive the strategic reorientation of the HOMAG Group.

UPM’s ValChem project to demonstrate wood to chemicals value chain

ValChem (Value added chemical building blocks and lignin from wood) is an ambitious project combining the competences of forest, chemical and bio-technology industries to realise a sustainable and innovative integrated process from wood to end products. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the technical and economic viability of an integrated biochemicals process covering the whole value chain from wood raw material to a selected platform chemical and lignin based performance chemicals. The project has received EUR 13.1 million funding from the European Union. The project will be done in cooperation with Sekab, METabolic EXplorer and Technische Universität Darmstadt. The total budget of the project is around EUR 18.5 million.

Valmet receives repeat order for two energy recovery systems from Sofidel

In order to increase energy efficiency of its tissue production lines, Sofidel SPA in Italy has ordered two Advantage ReTurne energy recovery systems from Valmet. The system does not only recover energy from the headbox jet power, but also returns it back to the process as electrical energy.

More than 500 professionals celebrate 5 years Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant

Over 500 people have gathered today at the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant to celebrate the 5th anniversary of this pilot facility for biobased processes and products. During the celebration, Minister Philippe Muyters, Flemish Minister for Work, Economy and Innovation has inaugurated two new 15.000 litre bioreactors. These new bioreactors form a significant extension of the innovation and demonstration infrastructure of the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant.

Metsä Fibre has signed the financing agreements for the Äänekoski bioproduct mill project

Metsä Fibre Corporation, part of Metsä Group, has on 10 June 2015 signed the financing agreements for the Äänekoski bioproduct mill project and refinanced its existing EUR 270 million revolving credit facility. The financing for the Bioproduct mill project is in total EUR 750 million and consists of several financing arrangements. The new revolving credit facility is EUR 300 million with a maturity date five years from the signing. In addition, the company has signed a EUR 150 million shareholder loan agreement with Itochu Corporation.
