GE and Kemira Create Global Alliance to Bring Water technology to the pulp and paper industry

The formal distribution agreement, which combines GE's advanced water technology with Kemira’s on-site services to deliver a seamless offering to the global pulp and paper industry. For the first time, GE’s newest and most advanced boiler and utility area cooling product technologies as well as membrane cleaning chemistry and the entire chemistry water portfolio is now available to the pulp and paper industry.

Sappi to build ground-breaking nanocellulose pilot plant

Sappi will locate a pilot-scale plant for low-cost Cellulose NanoFibrils (nanocellulose) production at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen in the Netherlands, after a global review of potential sites. The pilot plant is expected to be operational within nine months.

Valmet to deliver a biomass based boiler plant to Nokianvirran Energia

Valmet's delivery will include a HYBEX boiler with a steam power of 68 megawatts (MW) that employs the fluidized bed technology, flue gas purification equipment, and the plant's electrification and automation system.

Stora Enso appoints two new members to the Group Leadership Team

Stora Enso has appointed Gilles van Nieuwenhuyzen as Executive Vice President of the Packaging Solutions division and Markus Mannström as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to head up the new Group Technology function. They will be members of the Group Leadership Team, with the appointments being effective as of 16 March 2015.

Going back to our roots – Sappi HQ team continue tradition with Employee-led Tree-Planting Expedition

On the 27th of February 2015, employees from Sappi Europe’s Headquarters in Brussels headed out to the Forêt de Soignes with a batch of 1,400 saplings, ready to be planted. A further 2,600 will be planted by Natuur en Bos on behalf of Sappi. This will bring to over 12,000 the number of trees replanted by the group since the initiative started 5 years ago.

Resolute to close machine #9 at the Alma Paper Mill

Resolute Forest Products Inc. announced the permanent closure of paper machine #9 at its mill in Alma (Quebec), representing a reduction of 75,000 metric tons of annual specialty papers production capacity. The decision was driven by market weakness, exacerbated by fiber cost issues in Quebec, as well as ongoing misinformation campaigns by Greenpeace and other environmental activist groups.

DS Smith acquisition of Duropack

DS Smith Plc, the leading provider of recycled corrugated packaging in Europe, announced the proposed acquisition of the Duropack business for approximately €300m. Duropack, a recycled corrugated board packaging business with market-leading positions across South Eastern Europe, is being acquired from CP Group 2 BV, a One Equity Partners subsidiary.

KCL aquires Labtium fiber and paper laboratory

KCL expanded its portfolio of operational services with the acquisition of the fiber and paper laboratory in Espoo from Labtium Oy. In early February, the acquired fiber and testing laboratory will be merged with KCL's existing facilities, thus providing both pilot plant and laboratory scale testing in a single centralized location under KCL's supervision.

Eurovast starts up the new tissue machine supplied by Toscotec at Cartiera della Basilica, Lucca

The Italian producer Eurovast successfully started up a new Toscotec tissue machine at Cartiera della Basilica, Bagni di Lucca. The MODULO-PLUS crescent former with double press configuration and steel Yankee dryer TT SYD-3200MM with a maximum speed of more than 1500 mpm.

Petri Helsky starts as the CEO of Metsä Tissue on April 16

Petri Helsky, M.Sc (Chem. Eng.), M.Sc (Econ), 48, will start as the CEO of Metsä Tissue Corporation and as a member of Metsä Group’s Executive Management Team as of 16 April 2015. Metsä Group published a stock exchange release concerning Helsky’s appointment on 12 January 2015.

Valmet Tissue Technology Award granted to modification of hard wood pulp for tissue production

The focus area for the award this year was environmental efficiency. The objective of Mr. Salam's work was to develop a method to provide unique tissue characteristics using only natural materials. By modifying hardwood pulp, it can be cross-linked with a biodegradable product to greatly improve absorbency properties. The modified fibers are elastic, very soft, highly porous and durable, and also have microbial properties.
