Bellmer: Modernizing PM3 for Mpact, South-Africa

Mpact has once again selected Bellmer as rebuild specialist for the Group’s Project Khulisa. The project will enable the mill to enhance its total product offering and overall competitiveness, to migrate from bagasse furnish to recycled paper and to increase capacity by 60,000 t to 215,000 t/y.

In addition to further quality improvements, a key outcome of the project is the increase in paper strength properties. Bellmer was the main supplier seven years ago for the initial upgrade of PM 3, which proved to be a highly successful initiative.

Phase 1 of Project Khulisa will be completed in the first half of 2015 and includes the installation of a TurboVaahtoJetter headbox to improve formation and cross-direction profile. The optimisation also includes the installation of a TurboFeeder for safe tail transfer, as well as a TurboTransporterPro roll transport system from reeler to unwind stand.

Part 2, to be completed by mid-2017, includes the installation of a new top wire section with another TurobVaahtoJetter headbox for further quality improvement and the added flexibility of a second ply. To achieve increased paper strength, a TurboFilm Sizer, including Airturn, will also be installed. The drying area will be optimised through a redesign of the dryer groups and the installation of sheet stabilising equipment from Bellmer subsidiary, Lang-Hafner.

In addition, Project Khulisa will see Bellmer delivering engineering and planning expertise in the areas of approach flow systems, white water circuits, air systems, as well as the steam and condensate system.
