Metsä Group trains 50 new forest industry professionals with an apprenticeship contract

Metsä Group is kicking off apprenticeship training in its production units across Finland once again. The company is looking for some 50 people with vocational training, who will gain a qualification for versatile and responsible production tasks at Metsä Group’s mills during their 18-month apprenticeship. The training is set to begin in January 2020.

“The work in forestry production is continuously changing and evolving. We use the industry’s latest and best technology, which means that the competence requirement level is rising. Automation and robotics are taking over simpler tasks, which offers interesting challenges for both our current and future specialists,” says Pertti Hietaniemi, Metsä Group’s Senior Vice President, HR.

Metsä Group has organised apprenticeship training for a number of years now, and the selected group of trainees has come from a range of different backgrounds.

“Not even seasoned professionals should shun the term apprenticeship; it refers to paid training which provides a great path to a career at Metsä Group. Some may change the branch of industry they’re working in, while others deepen the know-how they already have,” adds Hietaniemi. “We’re looking for great co-workers, with the desire and motivation to develop. We’ll then train them ourselves into top-notch professionals for demanding and versatile production duties.”

A suitable educational background for the selected apprentices is a basic degree in electric automation, process or mechanical engineering, for example, or an applicable polytechnic degree. After training, the apprentices will principally find employment in various jobs at Metsä Group’s production units.

“The training will be provided by our own professionals. It will be carried out in the spirit of mentoring and is really a form of mutual learning – the newcomers will provide us with a fresh perspective, giving every mentor a chance to challenge their own thinking. Renewal is an important value for us, and this goal is also supported by this recruitment, which takes the form of an apprenticeship.”

“At Metsä Group, you get to see wood’s entire value chain from a responsibly produced raw material to a world-class bioproduct sold in the global markets. Every Metsä Group employee commits to strengthening a safe working culture and participates in preventive safety work. Our diverse and growing Group provides good opportunities for career rotation and, if realised, our planned new investments will increase employment opportunities within the company.”

The final application date for the training beginning in January 2020 is 13 October 2019. The apprenticeship training will be organised at the following mill locations.

Metsä Fibre, sawmills: Kyrö, Lappeenranta, Renko and Vilppula
Metsä Fibre, pulp mills: Joutseno, Kemi, Rauma and Äänekoski
Metsä Board: Simpele, Tampere and Äänekoski
