Archroma announces CEO transition

Archroma, a global actor in color and specialty chemicals towards sustainable solutions, today announced its transition plan for the function of Chief Executive Officer. The Board of Directors of Archroma has appointed Heike van de Kerkhof to succeed current CEO Alexander Wessels effective January 6, 2020. Mr. Wessels has held the CEO position at Archroma since the Company was established in October 2013 and will be appointed as Vice Chairman of the Company’s Board of Directors. He will also take on a Senior Advisory role within SK Capital working across its portfolio of investments, which includes Archroma.

ABB supplies complete electrification and automation solution for Dohaco’s mill in Ben Tre province, Vietnam

Application period for Metsä Group’s summer jobs begins – real jobs and fair pay

One of Finland’s biggest summer job recruitments is getting under way again. In the coming year, Metsä Group will provide a summer job for nearly 900 future professionals. The company is also offering almost 300 summer jobs outside Finland. Metsä Group invests in providing summer employees with guidance for their jobs and support for their learning, offers responsible and diverse tasks and pays fair wages for summer jobs, according to the demands of each task.

Changes to Stora Enso’s Consumer Board and Packaging Solutions divisions

Stora Enso is merging its container board business in the Packaging Solutions division with the Consumer Board division, creating a new Packaging Materials division. The remaining business in Packaging Solutions, together with Stora Enso’s recently created formed fiber unit, will constitute a more focused Packaging Solutions division. The change is effective as of 1 January 2020. Based on the new structure, 2018 sales for the Packaging Materials division were approximately EUR 3,400 million and for Packaging Solutions EUR 700 million. The restated figures for the new divisional structure will be published during the first quarter of 2020.

Archroma completes the acquisition of BASF’s stilbene-based OBA business for paper and powder detergent applications

Archroma, a global actor in color and specialty chemicals towards sustainable solutions, announced that Archroma India Private Limited has completed the acquisition from BASF India Limited (BIL) of its stilbene-based OBA (optical brightening agents) business for paper and powder detergent applications. The transaction includes BASF’s stilbene-based OBA technology, portfolio and manufacturing unit at Ankleshwar, India, where approximately 100 people are employed.

WEPA chose Toscotec for 7 custom-made hood and air system rebuilds on a turnkey basis

Since 2006, German tissue manufacturer WEPA Group has chosen Toscotec for all its hood rebuilds at various paper mills in Germany and Italy. These projects were all turnkey operations, where Toscotec supplied the complete package for the rebuild, from its engineering design, to the components supply, down to onsite dismantling operations, erection, commissioning and start-up. For these rebuilds, Toscotec developed a custom-made design of its hoods aimed to increase production and reduce energy consumption to a minimum.

Sustainable future of paper-based products: First European recyclability guidelines for optimal packaging design

The use of paper for packaging purposes is growing every year, due to its excellent environmental performance but also to the increasing demand related to e-commerce and delivery services. There is a strong expectation from consumers, brands and retailers to have recyclable packaging material. A packaging recycling rate of 85% is already achieved today and the paper value chain continues to improve.

Kiruna Wagon's solutions improve Södra's pulp transports

Kiruna Wagon has been commissioned to streamline Södra Skogsägarna's pulp transports by increasing wagon loading and unloading productivity. The order comprises twenty-two wagons for Södra's pulp transports from the mill in Värö to the port in Varberg. Measuring twenty metres, the new wagon is almost twice as long as its predecessor and constitutes a productive solution, where the entire long side can be opened for maximum accessibility and safe loading and unloading with a clamp forklift.

Stora Enso appoints Jari Suominen as Head of the Forest division

Stora Enso has appointed Jari Suominen as EVP, Head of Forest division as of 1 January 2020. He will continue as a member of the Group Leadership Team. Jari Suominen has led Stora Enso’s Wood Products division since 2014. He has held several leadership positions in Stora Enso’s paper and wood products businesses since 1995. The search for a new divisional head for Wood Products will be initiated. Seppo Toikka, currently Head of Strategy and Business Controlling in Wood Products, is taking on the role as acting Head of the division as of 1 January 2020.

Strongly positive climate-change impact for Södra

According to a new report, Södra has a positive impact on global climate change, equivalent to 20 percent of Sweden’s combined emissions of CO2 equivalents. The measurements are based on the growth rate of forests owned by Södra’s 52,000 members, and the effects of forest products when they are used to replace more emission-intensive products and energy.

Acquisition of BTG successfully closed

After all required regulatory approvals were received, Voith successfully closed on the acquisition of BTG on December 1, 2019. The Swiss-based company offers a high-value portfolio of optimized and customized solutions for a range of applications, primarily for paper manufacturers. “The acquisition of BTG is an important strategic step for Voith. With BTG and its portfolio that is highly complementary to our own products and services, we strengthen our position as a full-line supplier,” states Andreas Endters, CEO of Voith Paper.

Metsä Board joins 4evergreen – a new alliance promoting fibre-based packaging in circular economy

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, is one of the founding members of the new 4evergreen industry alliance together with other members of CEPI, the European association representing the paper industry. The new alliance aims to boost the contribution of fibre-based packaging in a circular and sustainable economy that minimises climate and environmental impact.

Valmet delivers key technology for Bracell’s new pulp mill in Brazil

Valmet will deliver key technology for Bracell’s project to build a new pulp production line at the mill located in Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo state, Brazil. Valmet’s delivery includes an evaporation plant and a white liquor plant, in which the lime kilns are fueled with gasified biomass. The order was included in Valmet's orders received of the third quarter 2019. The value of the delivery will not be disclosed. However, a project of this size and scope is typically valued around EUR 200-250 million.

SIGnature Pack wins French packaging award

SIGnature Pack from SIG, the “world’s first aluminium-free aseptic carton pack that is 100% linked to plant-based renewable materials via a mass balance system”, has won the prestigious French packaging award in the ‘environmental’ category. SIGnature Pack was launched on the French market earlier this year with Candia, part of the leading French dairy cooperative Sodiaal. The award recognises SIG’s continued commitment to developing packaging innovations that add real value for consumers and the beverage industry, as well as Candia’s thought leadership in driving tangible and innovative solutions in the drinking milk market.

Valmet introduces new visible imaging system for pulp mill lime kilns

Valmet has launched a new Valmet Visible Thermal Imaging System, which provides the highest quality lime kiln process monitoring for pulp mills. Combining the camera temperature information with process controls can improve combustion optimization and reburned lime quality, and reduce emissions. The system also allows visual evaluation of flame shape, size, and temperature profile. Reduced maintenance costs and greater visibility during start-up and full load conditions can also be achieved.

Feldmuehle: Products from one source in 2020

Feldmuehle GmbH, manufacturer of label and flexible packaging papers, launched already in 2009 the new development of a label paper with 40 percent waste paper content (LabelSet PCW). As part of Feldmuehle’s realignment and the discussion on sustainability, work is underway to develop new papers based on recycling fibres. From the second quarter of 2020, the portfolio will be expanded by another wet-strength label paper and will be available to the market.

Stora Enso invests in pilot plant for bio-based plastic packaging material

Stora Enso is investing EUR 9 million to build a pilot facility for enabling the production of bio-based plastics as barrier in transparent packaging. The pilot plant will convert plant-based sugars into the renewable building block required to make PEF, a bio-based plastic, mainly targeting the food and beverage industry. The pilot plant will be located at Stora Enso’s Langerbrugge Mill in Belgium.

Domsjö Fabriker AB and Ecohelix AB: Cooperation on hemicellulose copolymers

Domsjö Fabriker AB and Ecohelix AB have agreed to cooperate on establishing a demo scale plant for production of the hemicellulose copolymers developed and patented by Ecohelix. The parties are already cooperating on a pilot scale plant located at the Domsjö Fabriker Mill. This pilot plant has been used to verify the raw material, the process, the products and to produce sample material for potential customers.

Södra takes new step to adapt forests to climate change

Södra is using controlled pollination to breed trees for tomorrow’s forests – a new innovation, where nearly 2 million seedlings are being propagated to produce trees that are healthier and more resilient, with 30 percent faster growth than trees in today’s forests.
