Smurfit Kappa takes a step forward to further drive down emissions at Pitea Paper Mill

Smurfit Kappa is investing in a series of upgrades to its flagship kraftliner mill in Piteå, Sweden. The project will focus on increasing the sustainability and efficiency of both its cooking plant and recovery boiler. Other developments planned for the mill include the installation of high-spec purification filters and an advanced combustion system. The work will be carried out during a planned 15-day closure of the mill next month.

Lycke with WaterAid in Scandinavia

The new Lycke Care WaterAid toilet tissue was launched in early March on Bergendahls shelves in partnership with the British non-governmental association WaterAid, a Sofidel partner on the subject of water also at corporate level. The exceptionally low use of water in the production of Sofidel’s paper products received indirect recognition in Sweden. It is the first time that a tissue product in Scandinavia has become the "mouthpiece" to raise awareness on the issue of water and to encourage responsible use of the resource by choosing more sustainable products.

Once again honoured with prestigious award

In 2019, Sappi was selected for an Avery Dennison Supplier Distinction Award for the second consecutive year. In doing so, the awarding authority honoured the paper manufacturer’s sustainable conduct, its high-quality products and being a real global supplier. While its group headquarters is in Johannesburg, South Africa, Sappi’s global packaging and speciality papers business supports eight Avery Dennison plants worldwide with numerous products from multiple facilities.

Valmet to supply a containerboard making line for Papierfabrik Palm

Valmet will supply a containerboard making line (PM 5) with extensive packages of mill-wide automation and services for Papierfabrik Palm's (Palm) Aalen-Neukochen mill in Germany. The new high-capacity board machine will replace three existing smaller machines and will be designed to produce lightweight and high-quality recycled fluting and testliner grades. The start-up is scheduled for 2021.

Digital printing papers for highest demands

Printing textiles and hard substrates with impressive results: this is what Transjet dye sublimation papers from Sappi stand for. The new Transjet Drive is a sublimation paper optimised for industrial printers with a glue-belt system and will be showcased for the first time at FESPA trade fair in Munich. Sappi will also be presenting its inkjet papers for large-format applications, the Fusion Topliner containerboard and various silicone base papers at Stand B6-B30.

Andritz starts up new dewatering technology at Zellstoff Pöls, Austria

International technology Group Andritz has successfully started up the latest innovation in dewatering – the Vertical Screw Thickener (VST) – at Zellstoff Pöls AG, Austria. The VST has been operating successfully since the beginning of December 2018 and supplying the existing MG paper production line PM2 with the maximum capacity of 360 t/d.

Co-determination negotiations completed

Co-determination negotiations concerning the closure of paper machine 6 at Stora Enso’s Imatra Mills in Finland, ended on 15 April 2019. The negotiations were part of the Group’s profit protection programme. Most of the impacts on personnel as a result of the layoffs can be managed through pension arrangements.

Hacking away the problem

Design hackathon is an event where diverse teams come up with innovative solutions to real-life problems, putting end users at the core. On April 12, a group of Kemira experts travelled to Rovaniemi, Finland, to mentor five teams participating in Dash Lapland, the northernmost design hackathon in the world. The teams worked intensively during the weekend to come up with solutions to our 1.5. degree challenge.

End-to-end paper solutions that make customers’ production smarter and more sustainable on display by Voith in PaperCon 2019 booth 301

Voith will feature interactive experiences for visitors to booth 301 at PaperCon 2019 from May 6 to 8 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. "The paper industry is quickly evolving and as a full-line supplier, PaperCon offers us an opportunity to share innovative technology that will help our customers meet their goals," said David Buchanan, president, Voith Paper, North America. World Corrugated Award 2019 goes to… Klingele!

On April 7th, Klingele won the "World Corrugated Award 2019" for the category "Environmental-Friendly and Intensive Production Contribution" in Shanghai. This award recognizes pioneering projects in design, marketing, management and social responsibility as well as focuses on teams and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the global corrugated industry.

Formed fiber: Renewable alternative to plastics

In March, Stora Enso announced a EUR 5 million investment to build a new production line and related infrastructure to manufacture formed fiber products in Sweden. This line will be operated by a new business unit which will also conduct research and development of new formed fiber materials and technologies. First products are expected to be on the market by the end of 2019. Sohrab Kazemahvazi will head up the new unit for formed fiber.
