Foundation stone of Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill laid in Äänekoski, Finland

The foundation stone of Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill was laid in Äänekoski today, 12 October 2015. The event was celebrated on the construction site, which is located next to Metsä Fibre’s operative pulp mill. There were speeches from Jyrki Katainen, Vice President of the European Commission, Kari Jordan, President and CEO of Metsä Group, Matti Tiusanen, Chairman of the Äänekoski Town Council and Ari Harlamow, Shop Steward of the construction site for the bioproduct mill.

Valmet-supplied LignoBoost plant now handed over to Stora Enso's Sunila mill in Finland

Stora Enso's Sunila mill is now running the Valmet-supplied LignoBoost lignin separation plant. As the last part of the handover process, the lignin dryer, was taken over by the Stora Enso team on September 15, 2015.

New ANDRITZ digester at Suzano

Stora Enso completes the divestments of its Barcelona mill and Komárom plant

Stora Enso has completed the divestment announced on 27 July 2015 of its Barcelona mill, which produces recycled-fibre based consumer board, to the private equity fund Quantum. The transaction is in line with Stora Enso’s strategy to focus its consumer board offering on high quality virgin-fibre products.

EPA Finalizes Plan to Address Contaminated Groundwater at Curtis Specialty Papers

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has finalized a plan to clean up contaminated groundwater at the Curtis Specialty Papers Superfund site in Milford Borough and Alexandria Township, New Jersey. The site includes the former Milford Paper Mill, which operated for 96 years before shutting down in 2003.

Smurfit Kappa announced their new European management structure: Roberto Villaquiran, currently CEO Corrugated Europe, will assume the new role of CEO Europe with overall responsibility for the existing European Paper and Corrugated divisions. Roberto will report directly to the Group CEO, Tony Smurfit.

UPM and SYKE’s study on ecosystem services provides more insight into the environmental impacts of wood-based products

UPM and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) have been developing a method for assessing ecosystem services derived alongside the production of wood-based products. This pilot study focused on the environmental impacts resulting from the growth of trees used for the production of one tonne of pulp.
