Resolute: Closure of 465,000 t of newsprint production


Resolute Forest Products Inc. announced the permanent closure of 465,000 t of newsprint production capacity in Canada. This capacity reduction will be achieved with the permanent closure of the Iroquois Falls newsprint mill, as well as PM1 at Baie-Comeau and PM4 at Clermont.

Sappi: Investing in two large-scale projects at Gratkorn mill

Sappi is ensuring its mill in Gratkorn, Austria, is fit for the future with two technology upgrades: In November 2014, its PM11 paper machine has been upgraded. Furthermore the possible grammage range for coated paper has been increased. In March 2015 a general rebuild of critical parts of the liquor boiler and recovery plant will start.

BASF & Schuster: Working jointly on barrier solution

BASF and "Feinpappenwerk Gebr. Schuster GmbH & Co. KG" are working jointly on a solution for a combined migration and grease barrier on recycled cardboard. The biopolymer ecovio PS 1606 is applied to recycled cardboard in an extrusion coating process.

UPM and WWF Finland have engaged in a dialogue on the status of wood-based liquid biofuels in Finland and present a list of joint measures to be carried out to promote sustainability.

Adforum: New events for the pulp, paper and biobased industries

Adforum and Mentor Communications AB are together launching two new events for the pulp, paper and biobased industries: International Pulp & Paper Week and Bioeconomy Innovation Forum. The events will be held at Stockholm fairground, Sweden, on May 24-26th 2016.

UPM: Call for action for EU members on advanced biofuels

Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels (LSB), an industry coalition to promote advanced biofuels, met on December 4th at the European Parliament with Members of the European Parliament, Commission representatives, and stakeholders in Brussels. LSB, chaired by UPM’s Marko Janhunen, is advocating for a strong EU-wide sub-target for advanced biofuels in the context of ILUC directive.

Keep Me Posted EU is a campaign promoting the citizen’s right to choose how they receive important information – paper, digital or both, without being penalised. The website www.keepmepostedeu.org will be updated with news on developments in European countries regarding the trend to push citizens towards entirely paperless communication and efforts to support citizen choice.

Valmet & Nokianvirran Energia: LOI regarding boiler plant delivery

Valmet and Nokianvirran Energia Oy have signed a letter of intent for a delivery of a biomass-fired boiler plant to a new steam heating station in Nokia, Finland. The new heating station will supply process steam to SCA Hygiene Products' paper mill, Nokian Tyres' factory, and district heat to Leppäkosken Sähkö's customers.

Valmet: Boardmaking lines started up at Anhui Shanying Paper, China

Valmet has supplied two high quality containerboard machines for Anhui Shanying Paper Industry Co., Ltd in the City of Ma'anshan in Anhui Province, China. Both machines, paper machine 5 (PM 5) and paper machine 6 (PM 6), were recently successfully started up.

Tembec: Ceasing operations at Temiscaming mill, Canada

In response to UNIFOR Union Local 233's decision to go on strike effective as of 6:30 p.m. November 27, Tembec ceases the operations at its Temiscaming, Quebec industrial complex, which comprises four main facilities manufacturing specialty pulp, high-yield pulp, multi-ply coated bleached board and powder and liquid phenolic resins.

Valmet: To strengthen its services presence in China

Valmet has made investments in its two service centers in Waigaoqiao and Guangzhou in China. The service centers are now able to offer pulp and paper customers a wider range of services, including manufacturing of pulp and paper process consumables and new press roll covers for board- and papermaking.

Södra: New Head of Innovation and New Business

Laila Rogestedt has been appointed Head of Innovation and New Business at Södra. She will assume her position on 1 March 2015, when she will also become a member of Group Senior Management reporting to the President and CEO Lars Idermark.

Stora Enso: Corenso divestment completed

Stora Enso has completed the divestment announced 30 September 2014 of its Corenso business operations to the Finnish packaging materials company Powerflute Oyj. The enterprise value of the transaction is approximately EUR 90 million, and the all cash consideration approximately EUR 102 million.
