Next week, we will be releasing our second issue of Bio-Fibre Magazine with exciting new innovations such as sophisticated speakers made from pulp-based, recyclable material, a fibre based material that can be made in roll form, just like paper, that is transparent, and snowboards produced with hemp fibres. There will also be articles about research on vulcanized fibre and on cellulose-based materials.

We hope to see you at a trade show soon: Susanne Haase and Jean-Pierre Ferreira will be at Tissue World in Barcelona, while Roswitha Keppler-Junius will be in Munich for the ICE and CCE.

Alexander Wassermann becomes CEO of Papersystems Group

As of March 1, 2013 Alexander Wassermann (47) has taken over chairmanship of the Management Board of Papersystems Holding GmbH as CEO. He is thus following Klaus Aarestrup, who departed the group on December 31, 2012, in order to accept a new challenge.

Ilim: First paper produced with new PM at Koryazhma, Russia

Ilim announced that on the 3rd of March in Koryazhma, Arkhangelsk oblast, the Group’s new paper machine build as a part of Big Koryazhma investment project made paper for the first time.

Mondi: Announcing price increase for MG papers

Mondi has announced a price increase of 50 EUR/t for brown and white MG papers in Europe for the second quarter 2013. The increase has been prompted by changing market conditions.

Metsä Board: Call for a return to solid pricing policies

Despite price adjustments over the previous year, attempts to preserve sustainability in the face of spiralling costs and price erosion are proving increasingly difficult for papermakers. Profit margins in the paper production industry are at unsustainably low levels. As Metsä Board explains; whilst prices for pulp, the most important raw material used in the production of paper, are on the up, paper prices are still feeling the effects of the markedly low levels achieved over the past few years.

Finnish forest industry 2012: Fall in production volumes

In total, Finland produced 10.7 million t of paper and paperboard in 2012; this is 5.6% less than in 2011. The fall in production volumes was due especially to the economic downturn in the main market areas of Europe, production capacity cuts and a fall in demand for graphic paper grades which account for about two-thirds of the Finnish paper industry's overall production.

From 15 October 2012 to 31 January 2013 Toscotec has closed a tight schedule of ten complete tissue machine start ups in three different continents: Africa, Europe and Asia.

Södra raises softwood and hardwood pulp price in Europe

Södra raised the price of its softwood pulp to USD 860 and hardwood pulp to USD 820 per t in Europe effective from 1st March 2013. Seasonal improvement together with maintenance shutdowns will improve the market balance further in spring 2013.

Metso: TAD tissue line started up at Clearwater Paper, USA

On schedule, December 13, 2012 Clearwater Paper’s new Metso-supplied Advantage THRU-AIR (TAD) tissue machine was successfully started up and produced its first ton of paper in Shelby, North Carolina, USA. The completion of the flagship facility in Shelby fulfills one of Clearwater Paper’s primary business strategies – to focus on growing the consumer segment of the company.

Voith: NanoPro - new roll cover for calenders

Voith just launched the NanoPro roll cover for calenders onto the market, which offers a very noticeable reduction of vibrations. This new cover is available for supercalenders, soft calenders and multi-nip calenders.

Metso: New polyurethane roll cover for blade coaters

Metso has launched CoteCondor, a new polyurethane roll cover for blade coater backing rolls. CoteCondor is designed for all blade coaters, but especially coaters using hard-coated coater blades.

CEPI: 2012 Statistics Report for European pulp and paper industry

CEPI (European Confederation of Paper Industries) just published its preliminary statistics report and indications are that paper and board production by CEPI member countries fell by in the region of 1.7% in 2012.
