Editor-in-chief
Dear ipw reader,

the year started with a big bang: Just a few days ago, UPM announced the permanent reduction of graphic paper by 580,000 t in Europe! Together with the decrease of 270,000 t of coated magazine paper capacity at the mill in Stracel, France, the company is about to sell, this will add up to approximately 850,000 t less graphic paper capacity in 2013.

For a while now, analysts have been repeating that the industry needs drastic action to cut capacity. And this step taken by UPM can certainly be called drastic. However, one has to bear in mind that structural changes in paper end-uses are a fact and I fear that it remains to be seen if this painful measure will at least be the last provision in this regard.

We will follow the development in any event in order to always keep you well informed.

Sincerely,
