Voith modernizes and expands stock preparation plant for Modern Karton PM 3 in Ergene, Turkey

Modern Karton, manufacturer of cardboard packaging and packaging paper in Turkey, recently signed a contract with Voith for the extension and modernization of its existing OCC line. Within the scope of the contract, Voith will also supply a new stock preparation line for pulp and recovered paper. The new order follows the successful upgrade and expansion of the existing DIP line.

Modernization and capacity increase of existing OCC line

The objective of the modernization project is to increase production by 30 percent and to allow the processing of recovered paper with a maximum contaminant content of 12 percent. This means that the increasingly poorer quality recovered paper used by the mill can be readily processed while at the same time improving the cleanliness of the finished stock.

The order comprises Voith’s BlueLine stock preparation components, including IntensaMaXX, IPU reject pump and IntensaScreenDrum for disposing of the contaminants from the existing pulper. Voith’s scope of supply also includes a protector system, HiClean HCL5 EcoMizer cleaner system for sand removal, LT3 lightweight contaminant cleaner, InfiltraDiscfilter and several IntegraScreens for fractionation and fine screening.

New stock preparation line for pulp and recovered paper

The scope of supply for the new stock preparation line comprises various components from the BlueLine product range. As an alternative to pulp, high-quality recovered paper can also be processed. This new stock preparation line provides the greatest possible flexibility for manufacturing the top ply of the white top testliner.

In addition to installing the BlueLine stock preparation components, Voith will also be responsible for the basic and detailed engineering as well as on-site services.

Voith will also implement an innovative water management control system that automatically controls the complete water system for the entire production line in a wide range of operating conditions. This contributes significantly to helping achieve consistently low fresh water consumption and wastewater volume.

Upgrade and extension of existing DIP line completed

To improve the quality and allow lower quality recovered paper to be processed, the existing DIP line was rebuilt by Voith in 2019. Among other aspects, the rebuild included an additional bleaching stage, another EcoCell flotation unit and an InfiltraDiscfilter. Moreover, the slot screening was retrofitted with a new IntegraScreen, and existing screening machines with rotors and screen baskets were upgraded to reflect the latest state-of-the-art technology.

“We are confident that our ambitious project goals will be met in full as a result of awarding the contract to Voith,” says Hamdullah Eren, CEO of Modern Karton. “Voith Paper had already done a great job on the previous PM 5 project and upgrade of the existing DIP line. The technology supplied was outstanding. This is why we decided to award the new order to Voith as well.”
